Framed antique oil painting on canvas signed with monogram HS (Henri Schafer 1833 - 1916) dated 1883, titled on verso Metz, Lorraine.
This framed oil painting on canvas is in fair condition and will require some conservation to bring it back to it original look. The original frame is in very nice condition, given it's age. However the painting could use a cleaning and restoration in a couple of places where the paint has come off the surface of the canvas. (See Photos).
Nicely executed, as is to be expected with paintings by Henri Schafer this one titled on the verso "Metz, Lorraine", signed with monogram "HS" (Henry Schafer) and dated 1883 this wonderful and charming street scene is a large size from the artist and great example of the works Henry Schafer did during is career.
Schäfer studied at l'Ecole National de Beaux-Arts in Paris. He painted town scenes, city scenes and cathedral interiors in Belgium, Germany, and France. He was known to have painted in a style reminiscent of Alfred Montague.
